VIENNA, MARCH 28 – The Italian Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Alessandro Cortese, addressed the Legal Subcommittee of COPUOS, stressing the importance of promoting international legal regime governing space activities.
Italy in Vienna: UN treaty and Artemis Accords are key for sustainable use of space
The 1967 Outer Space Treaty and new instruments, like the Artemis Accords, an American-led effort to return humans to the Moon by 2025 with the ultimate goal of expanding space exploration, “are key for peaceful and sustainable use of space”, said Cortese on the first day of the 61st Session.
The Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) was set up by the General Assembly in 1959. Its Legal Subcommittee meets every year for two weeks to discuss legal questions related to the exploration and use of outer space. Topics include the status and application of the five United Nations treaties on outer space, the definition and delimitation of outer space, national space legislation, legal mechanisms relating to space debris mitigation, and international mechanisms for cooperation in the peaceful exploration and use of outer space.
