Italy re-elected to Commission Crime Prevention, elected to WFP Executive Board

ROME/VIENNA, APRIL 24 – Italy has been re-elected to the Vienna-based Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice and elected to the Executive Board of the World Food Program. “We are proud to contribute to the United Nations efforts on global, economic, social and environmental security”, the Italian ministry of Foreign Affaris said on Twitter.

The Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) was established by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) resolution 1992/1, upon request of General Assembly (GA) resolution 46/152, as one of its functional commissions.

Composed by 40 Members who serve for a three year mandate, the Commission acts as the principal policymaking body of the United Nations in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. ECOSOC provided for the CCPCJ’s mandates and priorities in resolution 1992/22, which include improving international action to combat national and transnational crime and the efficiency and fairness of criminal justice administration systems. The CCPCJ also offers Member States a forum for exchanging expertise, experience and information in order to develop national and international strategies, and to identify priorities for combating crime.

The CCPCJ holds annual regular sessions as well as intersessional meetings. Towards the end of each year, the CCPCJ meets at a reconvened session to consider budgetary and administrative matters as the governing body of the United Nations crime prevention and criminal justice programme. Due to the worldwide situation related to COVID-19 and related factors, the 14th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, scheduled to be held in Kyoto, Japan on 20-27 April 2020, has been postponed to an as yet undetermined later date. The General Assembly formalized the postponement by its decision 74/L.47 on 13 April 2020.

Assisting 86.7 million people in around 83 countries each year, Rome-based the World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience.
