VIENNA, OCTOBER 13 – Ambassador Debora Lepre presented her credentials today as the Permanent Representative of Italy to UNIDO and to the Preparatory Commission of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO).
With the Director-General of UNIDO, Gerd Müller, the vision of international cooperation as a fundamental element for stability, peace, and prosperity was shared. The upcoming Italian presidency of the G7, food and technological security, and partnerships with developing countries were at the center of attention. Italy is one of the foremost supporters of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, ranking as the third-largest contributor in terms of financial resources, with over 30 ongoing and defining projects, and a recognized capacity for implementing innovative projects within the framework of Italian development cooperation.
Ambassador Lepre’s meeting with the Executive Secretary of the CTBTO, Robert Floyd, allowed for an exchange of assessments on the central role of the Commission in the nuclear non-proliferation system, in light of current systemic challenges. It highlighted the progress made towards the universalization of the Treaty and the priority of its entry into force. Also, the scientific and technological applications of the international monitoring system were a focal point, in which Italy directly contributes with its expertise and facilities, including hosting a seismic station and a laboratory for radionuclide analysis.
