ICC: Italy and Sweden deposit Kampala Amendments’ instruments of ratification

NEW YORK, JANUARY 26 – Italy deposited the instruments of ratification, signed by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella on 22 December, of the Amendments to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, adopted in Kampala on 10 and 11 June 2010.

The Permanent Representative of Italy to the UN, Ambassador Maurizio Massari, deposited the act during a ceremony at the UN headquarters in New York jointly with Sweden, which simultaneously deposited its instruments of ratification.

Recalling the satisfaction expressed by the Foreign Ministry at the time of adoption of the ratification by the Italian Parliament in November, Ambassador Massari stressed that this act reinforces the long-standing Italian commitment to support the Court, “a commitment that is an essential pillar for Italian diplomacy at the UN and for all Italian institutions, in order to strengthen the Rule of Law in international relations”.

The Kampala amendments define the scope of the crime of aggression and the conditions for the exercise of jurisdiction by the Court, and extend the scope of the ICC-establishing Rome Statute including three new scenarios to the list of war crimes, all related to the use of certain types of weapons in non-international armed conflicts.

With this act, Italy and Sweden join the States that have already ratified the Kampala amendments on the crime of aggression and war crimes (thus becoming respectively 43rd and 42nd, out of a total of 123 States Parties to the Rome Statute). (@Onuitalia)
