NEW YORK, 3 NOVEMBRE – Addressing an interactive dialogue of the General Assembly Third Commission the Italian Permanent Representative to the UN, Mariangela Zappia, commended today the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, for his leadership and reform strategy and reaffirmed its strong support for UNHR and its response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Zappia highlighted the urgency to fully implement the UN Women, Peace and Security Agenda and put the protection of women and children at core of every action.
Grandi, addressing the Third Committee, said that he has never seen the Security Council so incapable to find consensus even on humanitarian issues. “States keep reminding UNHCR to be apolitical, but they should be the ones putting politics aside when dealing with refugee matters”, said the High Commissioner.
