NEW YORK, MARCH 6 – On the first day of the 67th Commission on the Status of Women, the Italian Minister of Equal Opportunities and Family Eugenia Roccella, who is leading the national delegation, attended a EU ministerial meeting and the opening plenary session. Italy’s Parliament members attended a special side-event on Afghan women.
The theme of the 2023 session is digital education for gender equality. “We must close the gender digital divide. Every member of society, especially the most marginalized, must have equal access to digital skills and services,” said the head of UN Women Sima Bahous at the opening session. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres remarked that “gender inequality is a question of power.” He called for “urgent action to equalize power in three ways for women & girls: increase their education; Promote their full participation and leadership in STEM; create a safe digital environment for them” adding that “we cannot let the Silicon Valleys of our world become Death Valleys for women’s rights”.
Italy is organizing two sides events during this currents session. Tomorrow, with UNICEF and UNESCO, Minister Roccella will lead a discussion on digital education and skill for women’s and girls’ empowerment, while on March 9 the theme of the panel will be girls’ rights through the fight to eradicate female genital mutilation and early and forced marriages.
