NEW YORK, JANUARY 24 – With the song ‘Applause’ from the soundtrack of the Italian independent movie ‘Tell it Like a Woman’, legendary songwriter Diane Warren was nominated at the Academy Awards. The movie is the result of a collaboration between Iervolino Entertainment, a movie and television production company by Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi, and We do it Together by Chiara Tilesi and Lucas Akoskin, a non-profit production company that targets gender equality. The 95th edition of the Academy Awards will feature two other Italian names: ‘Le Pupille’ di Alice Rohrwacher will run as best live-action short, while Aldo Signoretti from ‘Elvis’ was nominated among the best five in his field for makeup and hair-style.
Warren, a 14 times Oscar nominee, is competing against artists of the likes of Rihanna and Lady Gaga. In addition to ‘Applause’, played by Sofia Carson, international music star and already Ambassador for UNICEF and UN Women, the other nominated tracks are ‘Lift Me Up’ from ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, ‘Hold My Hand’ from ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, ‘Naatu Naatu’ from ‘RRR’ and ‘This Is a Life’ from ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’.

‘Tell it Like a Woman’ will be screened at UN Headquarters on March 3 to raise the awareness on the issues of the fight against gender violence and female empowerment. Italy’s initiative at the UN, in collaboration with UN Women, will take place in the framework of the 2023 Italian vice-presidency of the largest UN agency on women’s rights and will celebrate the opening of the 67th session of the Commission on the State of Women (CSW) scheduled from 6 to 17 March.
This is the 14th nomination for Warren, who earlier this year received the Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement. Last September, ‘Applause’ was performed by her and Carson during an event organized during the High-Level segment of the General Assembly by the Italian Mission at the SDG Action Zone of the United Nations.
Premiered at the Taormina Film Festival, ‘Tell It Like a Woman’ is an anthology of seven stories directed by and starring women from all over the world. It’s a women’s polyphony, in which each actress of the international cast, such as the winner of David di Donatello Margherita Buy, Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden, Cara Delevingne, Leonor Varela, Jacqueline Fernandez, Anne Watanabe and Eva Longoria stars in a 15 minute short. Among the directors are Maria Sole Tognazzi, Lucia Puenzo and Catherine Hardwicke. (@OnuItalia)
