UNECE: Italy’s Ferrante elected Chair Working Group on Ageing

GENEVA, NOVEMBER 21 – At the 15th session of the UNECE Working Group on Ageing, held Nov. 21 and 22 in Geneva, Alfredo Ferrante, currently head of the International Relations Office of the Department for Family Policies of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, was elected to chair the Working Group.

The Working Group on Ageing is a permanent body in the United Nations system that has met annually since 2008 with the aim of contributing to the implementation of the 2002 Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing.

Italy wanted to give momentum to this shared commitment, so much so that it hosted the Ministerial Conference on Ageing in Rome on June 16 and 17, 2022, which concluded with the adoption of the Rome Declaration in which the ministers of UNECE member states set priorities for policies on aging over the next five years.

The election of Dr. Ferrante as chair of the Working Group on Ageing is a clear recognition of the results of Italy’s efforts to enhance the contribution of the UNECE Working Group in building a sustainable world for all ages.

During its two days of work, the Group adopted the Program of Activities 2023-2027 in support of the three specific goals set out in the Rome Declaration: promoting active and healthy aging throughout the life course; ensuring access to long-term care and support for caregivers and families; and integrating aging to grow a society fit for all ages. Finally, the Working Group worked to update the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing and its Regional Implementation Strategy to adapt aging policies to economic, social and digital transitions and emerging challenges.
