NEW YORK, MARCH 2 – Following the UN Secretary-General’s recommendation to Member States to amend the format of the 64th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in light of the current concerns regarding coronavirus disease (COVID-19), an informal meeting took place today and the Commission decided that the 64th session of the Commission will convene on 9 March, at 10.00 a.m. (EST), for a procedural meeting.
The meeting will include opening statements, followed by the adoption of the draft Political Declaration and action on any other draft resolutions. The session will then suspend until further notification. No general debate will take place and all side events planned by Member States and the UN system in conjunction with CSW 64 will be cancelled.
The Commission on the Status of Women is one of the largest UN events, second only, as far as participation, to the UN General Assembly. The session is usually attended by thousands of people from around the world. Today’s decision follows up on the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ suggestion to hold a scaled down session this March in view of the epidemics. (@OnuItalia)
