Fabriano, UNESCO Creative City, will host global meeting in June: resilience on the agenda

FABRIANO, FEBRUARY 20 – Fabriano, Italy is about to become the capital of the Creative Cities Network. More than 180 representatives from communities around the world will descend upon the small city in the Marche region for UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network annual meeting from June 10-16.

The meetings themes will focus on cities resilience and inclusion. “We want to challenge the current sense of distrust that is present amid constants contrapositions and closures,” said Francesca Merloni, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Creative Cities. “Cities are spaces that redefine the concepts and practices of being a community and go against the trends in national politics. Cities, more than states, are spaces of openness, of reception, of elaboration,” she added.

Pavilions featuring projects, installations, workshops and seminars, meetings, and presentations, will line the city streets tuning Fabiano into a small Expo. The city of Fabiano’s Facebook page read “ambitious projects from architects across Italy will give the city a new face.” Some of the projects that will be featured during the annual UNESCO meeting include a long communal table of gastronomy, since food is something that brings people together, a music festival presented by various international musicians, and a design workshop focused on making cities more accessible and inclusive.

Fabriano’s history producing quality paper and its other artisanal crafts are what granted the “Creative City” title in October 2013 in the category of craft and folk art. Fabriano is well known for its Carta Fabriano and its popular tradition, the Palio of San Giovanni. (@Onuitalia)
