UNGA 78: Tajani in New York until Sept. 20; focus on migrations, Africa, Balkans

ROME, SEPTEMBER 17 – The Vice President of the Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation,  Antonio Tajani, will be in New York starting today until September 20 for the High-Level Week of the 78th United Nations General Assembly. The focus of the mission will be on migrations, according to a statement from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Tajani will discuss this issue in various events at the United Nations and during bilateral meetings with his counterparts and leaders of international organizations responsible for the matter. Significant attention will also be given to Africa, a priority for Italian foreign policy, and to the Western Balkans, a region where Italy increasingly plays a leading role in supporting its integration into the European Union.

On Monday, September 18, Tajani will lead the Italian delegation at UN headquarters, speaking at the Summit on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), an important opportunity for dialogue among the world’s leaders on how to accelerate the implementation of the “UN Agenda for Sustainable Development” by 2030.

On the same day, the Vice Premier will chair a working meeting with the Foreign Ministers of Albania, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia. Also on that day, there will be a meeting with counterparts from Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Somalia to discuss socio-economic issues in the Horn of Africa and their impact on migration, as well as potential regional collaborations.

On Tuesday, September 19, alongside Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the Vice Premier will attend the opening of the General Debate. Among other key appointments on the agenda, Tajani will preside over the ministerial meeting of the “Uniting for Consensus” group – in which Italy has served as coordinator since its inception – on the reform process of the Security Council.

As part of Italy’s side events during the General Debate, the Vice Premier will coordinate a meeting focused on education as a key factor for development and ensuring a future for children in crisis contexts. Furthermore, along with Japan, the United Arab Emirates, and the UN, he will preside over an event dedicated to food systems and climate, not only confirming Italy’s leading role in food security but also aligning with last July Food Systems Summit in Rome.

During the high-level week, Tajani will also participate in the traditional meetings of EU and G7 Foreign Ministers and meet with major Jewish associations.

Throughout the New York mission, the Vice Premier will also inaugurate the “Farnesina Collection” exhibition at the Italian Cultural Institute and have meetings with prominent figures in the American business and financial world to present the Italian government’s renewed growth diplomacy strategy and investment opportunities in Italy.
