UNIFIL’s Joint Task Force Lebanon Sector West, led by Italy, completes projects to support local communities

SHAMA (LEBANON), JULY 26 – The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) Joint Task Force Lebanon Sector West (JIF-L SW), under Italian leadership and based on the Paratroopers Folgore Brigade, has recently concluded a series of project inaugurations to address the most pressing needs of local communities.

In Bint Jubail Municipality, a photovoltaic system has been installed to provide electricity to the waste management center. A second photovoltaic system has been established in support of the National Police command.

In Tibnin, the project to refurbish the roof of the girls’ orphanage has been completed. Additionally, projects related to water collection and sanitation have been inaugurated in the Municipalities of Marwahin, Tayr Harfa, Al Bayyad, and Al Hinniyah.

In Shama and Tiro, solar-powered street lamps have been installed, and interventions to enhance the archaeological site of Al Bass have been inaugurated.

UNIFILAt the Christian Center “Ya Salam” in Al Qawzah Municipality, an octagonal pergola, known as “vurta,” was inaugurated. This structure was entirely built by the specialist units of the Folgore Brigade’s Engineering Corps. These same units also constructed an aviary at the Institute for children with special needs in Aita as Shab.

These outreach activities are carried out in line with other operational functions, as highlighted by Brigadier General Vergori. “UNIFIL combines over 400 daily operational activities, of which more than 220 are conducted by the West Sector, in full compliance with the mandate of United Nations Resolution 1701,” he stated. The force places great emphasis on meeting the needs of the local population, supported by motivation, a serious intent, and respect for the cultures and customs of the communities in Southern Lebanon.

All activities in the Operational Theater are conducted under the coordination and guidance of the Inter-Force Joint Command (COVI), which is the high command of the Defense led by Lieutenant General Francesco Paolo Figliuolo. COVI is responsible for the planning, coordination, and direction of military operations, national and multinational joint exercises, and related activities.

UNIFIL’s ongoing efforts reflect its commitment to fulfilling its mandate while prioritizing the welfare of the local communities it serves. The projects completed under the guidance of the Joint Task Force Lebanon Sector West and the Italian leadership demonstrate the positive impact of international collaboration in supporting Lebanon’s development and stability.
