Italy in Geneva, “social inclusion strategic axe of recovery plan”

GENEVA, MARCH 25 – The Human Rights Coordinator of the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Counsellor Daniele Borrelli, took the floor yesterday in the General Debate on Agenda item 5 regarding human rights bodies and mechanisms, in the framework of the 49th session of the Human Rights Council.

Counsellor Borrelli reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to cooperate with the human rights bodies and mechanisms, including the Special Procedures mandate holders, and its support to the essential role of human rights defenders, their work and participation in the activities of the Council, condemning all forms of reprisal against them.

Italy welcomed the report of the third session of the Forum on Human Rights, Democracy and Rule of Law and valued its focus on equal access to justice and inclusion, which are at the core of governance systems based on human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

In this regard, Counsellor Borrelli recalled that, at national level, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and especially with the SDG 16, Italy has set social inclusion as one of the strategic axes of its National Plan on Recovery and Resilience. It was then stated that, at international level, Italy promotes and supports transitional justice processes, contributing to reduce the root-causes of crises and strengthening the resilience of populations and local systems.

Counsellor Borrelli concluded his statement highlighting that, during the current Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, Italy has committed to strengthen social inclusion and resilience, including by protecting the rights and enhancing the role of women and young people. Read the full statement here.
