Del Col meets Massari in New York for farewell visit

NEW YORK, FEBRUARY 15 – On a farewell visit to the UN Headquarters in New York at the end of his mandate as head of UNIFIL, General Stefano del Col met the Italian Permanent Representative, Maurizio Massari, to take stock of the years spent in southern Lebanon as Head of Mission and Force Commander, and the upcoming challenges of blue helmets whose role is crucial for the achievement of lasting stability in Lebanon.

“Thank you Stefano Del Col for your tireless commitment to UNIFIL alongside the people of Lebanon, and for the excellent collaboration of these years. Best wishes for your future from all of us”, said Massari on Twitter.

On February 4, Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed General Aroldo Lázaro Sáenz from Spain at the head of UNIFIL. Del Col had taken command of UNIFIL in the summer of 2018 replacing Michael Beary from Ireland. He was the fourth Italian, since 2007, to lead the peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon, following generals Claudio Graziano (2007-2012), Paolo Serra (2012-2014) and Luciano Portolano (2014-2016).

About a thousand Italian soldiers and police forces are part of UNIFIL, accounting for almost a tenth of the entire contingent, thanks to which Italy ranks second, after Indonesia, among contributors of troops in South Lebanon. Thanks to the commitment of its blue helmets in UNIFIL, Italy is the first country of the western group (WEOG) among contributing Members to UN peacekeeping. Spain provides about 600 blue helmets, one of 46 Countries in total to contribute to UNIFIL. (@Onuitalia)
