ROME, JULY 25 – At the conclusion of the second day of the United Nations Food Systems Summit in progress in Rome, the Vice President of the Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, took part – together with UN officials, numerous foreign Ministers, and the Italian Minister of Agriculture Francesco Lollobrigida – in the presentation of the Global Coalition of Farmers’ Markets, held at the “Campagna Amica” market at Circus Maximus.
In reaffirming Italy’s full support for the Coalition, the Vice Premier emphasized the deep connection between production, territory, and consumption, which has traditionally been the foundation of Italian food culture. He highlighted the similarities between the model developed by “Campagna Amica,” which focuses on promoting short supply chains and enhancing local excellences, and the one promoted by the Coalition, demonstrating that Italy’s good practices can be replicated worldwide to preserve the specificities of local traditions.
During the event, Tajani and the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, had a productive exchange of opinions on key food and regional issues. In particular, the Vice Premier emphasized Italy’s attention to upcoming political developments concerning sustainable development, laying the groundwork for the UN Summit on SDGs scheduled in New York and Italy’s presidency of the G7.
Tajani also signed the founding agreement of the initiative “Towards Stability and Peace in Somalia” with Abshir Omar Huruse, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Somalia. Through this initiative, the Italian government commits to provide 3,820,000 euros to the fund established by the Somali federal government to finance concrete interventions in support of regions in the country liberated from al-Shabaab. Italy is currently the leading and significant donor to the Fund. (@OnuItalia)
