NEW YORK, May 25 – The Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Riccardo Guariglia, has been in New York for a series of contacts with the heads of the United Nations. In a meeting with the Deputy Secretary General Amina Mohammed, Guariglia reaffirmed Italy’s strong support for the UN and multilateralism, as well as the commitment to ensuring that the objectives for sustainable development of the Agenda 2030 remain the highest priority for the international community.
According to the Italian diplomat, this is a goal that events such as the Food Security Stocktaking Moment, which will take place in Rome at the FAO headquarters from July 24 to 26, will contribute to achieving ahead of the September summit on the SDGs.
The Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also met with the Under-Secretary of UNDESA, Li Junhua, to whom he confirmed Italy’s support through contributions and cooperation projects, including assistance to the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and the JPO program, which allows young graduates to gain experience in international careers. This was an opportunity to discuss another upcoming international event in Rome in the coming weeks: the fourth conference on SDG 16 (“Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels”), co-organized by UNDESA and IDLO.
Guariglia also met with the staff of the Italian Permanent Mission to the UN, led by Ambassador Maurizio Massari. He expressed “support and encouragement to a cohesive team whose daily works embodies Italy’s strong commitment to multilateralism”, reported the Mission on its social media profiles. (@OnuItalia)
