Africa: Italy reiterates is engagement, both bilaterally and on multilateral levels

NEW YORK, AUGUST 9 – During a debate organized by the Chinese rotating presidency of the Security Council on peace and security in Africa, Italy reiterated its engagement, both at the bilateral and multilateral levels, on fronts that are inextricably linked to peace and security, such as climate change and terrorism.

During the Italian G20 Presidency, Italy put the fight against climate change at the very core of its international agenda, building on efforts to enhance climate finance from developed countries and debt reduction for African countries. Italy is also particularly active in the Global Coalition against Sahel.

“There is no single solution to sustain peace and security in Africa, but collectively we are called to make every effort in this direction, aware that multilateralism remains key”, an Italian delegate said explaining the three cornerstones of its support to peace and security in Africa, the first being further investiments in a strategic dialogue between the Security Council and regional and sub-regional African organizations.

As member of the Peacebuilding Commission in 2023-24, Italy also will work on conflict prevention. It will furthermore make leverage on multilateralism to promote human rights and the rule of law.

The Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have affected international peace and security, dramatically exacerbating the root causes of conflict in the African continent, an Italian delegate said: “We must converge on the priorities that the African Union summarized in the 2063 Agenda and support effective partnerships to make financing for development a key priority”.

Italy will continue to support the African Peace and Security Architecture with financial assistance, training and capacity building programs and is in favor of using UN-assessed contributions for African-led peace operations, provided that appropriate standards are met. To this end, Italy supports the work of the Carabinieri corps, entrusted by the Italian Foreign Ministry, with the mandate to cooperate with AU partners on capacity building of police and security forces.
