VICENZA, JUNE 21 – The United Nations Police (UNPOL) Adviser Luis Carrilho opened the 8th Annual UN FPU Coordinators Workshop, aimed at strengthening the performance and effectiveness of United Nations police and hosted by the Center of Excellence for Stability Police Units in Vicenza.
What is CoESPU?
The Center of Excellence for Stability Police Units (CoESPU), established in Vicenza (Italy) as a Carabinieri center opened to international contributions, is a center for advanced studies and a doctrinal hub, serving as a think tank and a training center. It was set up by Carabinieri in March 2005 as part of an agreement between the Italian Government and the G-8 Nations. The Center sensitive task is not only to train Peacekeepers – and to prepare them through the Carabinieri-like approach – but also to analyze and develop stability policing doctrine within the UN framework, as well as of other International Organizations.
Meeting with Italian, NATO officers to expand cooperation
During the workshop, Luis Carrilho welcomed UNPOL heads of operations, formed police unit coordinators and other senior UNPOL officials, and met with Brigadier General Giovanni Pietro Barbano, head of the Center of Excellence for Stability Police Units, and Colonel Giuseppe De Magistris, Director of the NATO Stability Policing Centre of Excellence, to discuss expanding cooperation with the United Nations.
