NEW YORK, DECEMBER 3 – Today at Italy’s Mission to the UN annual consultations took place among delegations from the Center of Excellence for Stability Police Units (CoESPU), the UN Department for Peacekeeping, the United States and Italy’s Military Adviser Offices.
The Deputy Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations, Ambassador Stefano Stefanile, opened the meeting, attended also by the Assistant Secretary General Alexander Zouev from the UN Department for Peace Operations, the Italian Defence Staff, represented by the Defence Attaché and Military Adviser of the Italian Mission to the UN, Carabinieri Maj. Gen. Fabrizio Parrulli, the CoESPU, represented by its Director, Brig. Gen. Giovanni P. Barbano, and the Military Councillor Office at the United States Mission to the UN, in the person of Col. Glenn Sadowsky.
The United Nations recognises the efforts made by Italy and CoESPU, not only for the resources promptly deployed, but also for culture and the “way” of peacekeeping, based on an integrated approach that emphasis civil, military and police collaboration and dialogue with civilian populations, with particular attention also to the environmental impact of peacekeeping missions and the protection of cultural heritage in post-conflict scenarios.
The discussion focused on the cooperation among the United Nations, Italy and the United States for the training of peacekeepers in Vicenza’s center of excellence. “Italy is fully committed to support Un peacekeeping also through the Global Service Center of Brindisi (UNGSC)”, the Italian Mission reminded on Twitter.
The Center of Excellence for Stability Police Units (CoESPU), established in Vicenza (Italy) as a Carabinieri center opened to international contributions, is a center for advanced studies and a doctrinal hub, serving as a think tank and a training center. It was set up by Carabinieri in March 2005 as part of an agreement between the Italian Government and the G-8 Nations.
The Center sensitive task is not only to train Peacekeepers – and to prepare them through the Carabinieri-like approach – but also to analyze and develop stability policing doctrine within the UN framework, as well as of other International Organizations. (@OnuItalia)
