ROME, JUNE 21st- Emanuela Del Re has been appointed to the post of EU Special Representative for the Sahel. “I am deeply moved by this appointment. Not only is it an important recognition of my years work, but it’s also a challenge in view of the great responsibilities that are implied by this truly strategic role for the European Union and Italy,” said the former Deputy Foreign Minister in Giuseppe Conte’s government.
The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed this appointment. During her term in office, the Ministry further notet, Del Re worked with passion and effectiveness on the African continent and, in particular, the Sahel region, both bilaterally and at European level, in the framework of the new European Union Strategy for the Sahel.
Besides rewarding Del Re’s outstanding competences, the appointment “testifies to the increasingly profiled role played by Italy in a geographical area that has become strategic for the security of the whole of Europe”.
47 years old Del Re is a sociologist and expert in international politics. She has worked on the themes of migration and refugees, conflicts, religious issues and minorities. During its presidency of the G20 and as co-chair of the COP26 in 2021, Italy will organize high-level events on Africa. It will furthermore place the fight against terrorism and instability in the Sahel region among the central themes of the ministerial meeting of the Anti-Daesh Coalition, to be held at the end of June.
