International Women’s Day: Italy rejoins UN Women’s Executive Board

NEW YORK, MAY 5 – Ahead of International Women’s Day, Italy rejoins UN Women’s Executive Board, in line with the Italian Delegation at the United Nations long standing partnership to promote women’s rights around the world.

The Board consists of 41 members: 10 from African States; 10 from Asian States; 4 from Eastern European States; 6 from Latin American and Caribbean States; 5 from Western Europe and Other States; and 6 from top contributing countries. Usually, each member serves a three-year term. The Western European and Others group has established a rotation schedule for its members under which some States do not serve a full three-year term. Along with Italy three others members joined the Board: Andorra, Denmark and Luxembourg.

In general, the Board provides guidance to the Under-Secretary-General/Executive Director on the operational work of UN-Women; ensures that its operational activities and strategies are consistent with the overall policy guidance set forth by the General Assembly, ECOSOC and monitors the organization’s performance; approves its Strategic Plans, programmes and activities, including those at the country level; and decides on its administrative and financial plans and its budgets.

This year, the theme for International Women’s Day (8 March), is “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world.”. It will celebrate the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and highlight the gaps that remain.
