Climate change: Zappia, “climate action is not on pause”

NEW YORK, OCTOBER 27 – Addressing a virtual briefing presenting the “Climate Ambition Summit”, Italy today stated that  collective ambition must be raised for decisive action against climate change. Italy, along with the European Union, is is committed to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, the Italian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Mariangela Zappia, said via video-conference, adding that Europe’s Green New Deal will lead to transformative change all across the continent.

“Our decisions today will determine carbon trajectories for decades to come. As incoming G20 Presidency, Italy will work to ensure that climate action be the foundation of the post-pandemic recovery”, said Zappia, adding that “climate action is not on pause” because of the pandemic.

Along with the UN, the UK, France and Chile Italy is a partner in promoting the “Climate Ambition Summit”. Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 crisis, “the event will be a fundamental opportunity to relaunch the commitments undertaken five years ago in Paris and to raise our collective ambition, working for braver and more decisive actions against climate change and for a “green” recovery based on the principles of sustainability, solidarity and inclusivity”, said Zappia. The Ambassador observed that 2021 will offer the opportunity to build international momentum on climate action also through other major events: the Food Systems Summit and the Global Health Summit that Italy will host together with the European Commission. In both cases, specific attention will have to be paid to the strong interrelations between climate change, food systems and public health. (@Onuitalia)
