Disarmament: Stefanile, “multitaleralism is best tool to preserve results”

NEW YORK, OCTOBER 19 –  Addressing today the United Nations General Assembly First Commission Italy reiterated its firm support for the international architecture on disarmament, arms control and non-proliferation. “Effective multilateralism and a rules-based international system are the only tools to preserve results and advance them”, said the Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Stefano Stefanile.

More in detail, Stefanile said that the NPT remains the cornerstone of the international regime: “The only realistic legal framework to attain a world without nuclear weapons”. Italy calls for prompt entry into force of CTBT and respect of the moratorium on nuclear test explosions, said the Ambassador.

Italy remains also strongly committed to the Chemical Weapons Convention and the OPCW. “We strongly condemn any use of chemical weapons anywhere, at any time, by anyone and under any circumstances. Accountability is crucial”, added Stefanile, while underlining “the utmost importance for a greater contribution from the civil society and of including women in disarmament negotiations and peacebuilding programs” and promoting policies and approaches that enable the full empowerment of women.
