ROME, MAY 17 – On the occasion of the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), dedicated to the topic “Together Always: United in Diversity”, Italy recalls the universality and inviolability of human rights and that they should be ensured to all, without distinction or discrimination.
The fight against all forms of discrimination is an integral part of Italy’s commitment to protect and promote human rights at the international level, starting from the UN, the EU and the EU Council, the Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs stated, adding that the fight against discrimination is essential to building inclusive and peaceful societies where diversity is respected and no one is left behind. “Inclusive societies shall enable every individual to contribute actively to the growth and development of their community and Country, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals”.
The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, joined the International Day witha statement: “Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia constitute a persisting insufferable social scourge and the cause of intolerable discrimination and violence that, in some areas of the world, is even legitimated by laws that trample on individual rights”, he said.
Since 2007, when the European Parliament established the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, the sensitivities on these themes of the collective conscience have sharpened, President Mattarella added: “Actions to combat the numerous episodes of violence that are continuously recorded in the news cannot stop”. He called upon the Institutions to develop effective prevention strategies aimed at educating people to respect the diversity of others and towards inclusion. (@OnuItalia)
