NEW YORK, NOVEMBER 29 – The Italian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Maurizio Massari, met today the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Joanna Wronecka. The talks allowed an exchange of views on the situation in Lebanon following Ms. Wronecka briefing of the UN Security Council.
Massari and the Special Coordinator discussed also her upcoming participation to the 2022 editions of Med Dialogues, the annual high-level initiative promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and ISPI (Italian Institute for International Political Studies) in Rome with the aim to rethink traditional approaches to the area and to draft a new “positive agenda”, addressing shared challenges at both the regional and the international level.
Ambassador Massari assured Italy’s support for the Special Coordinator relentless work for a better future for all Lebanese people. Yesterday Ms. Wronecka and Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, briefed the Security Council on the implementation of Resolution 1701 and the overall situation in Lebanon. The Special Coordinator commended Lebanon and Israel for putting an end to their maritime boundary dispute and establishing a permanent maritime boundary on 27 October. “This is a historic achievement that could promote security and stability in the region and generate economic benefits for both countries,” she said.
While welcoming this progress at the regional level, the Polish diplomat said that more needs to be done internally in Lebanon to address a multitude of accumulating political and socio-economic crises. She noted in particular the urgency of prioritizing the election of a new President to end the vacuum in Lebanon and the formation of a fully functional government. (@OnuItalia)
