IAEA: Italy’s Cortese to Board of Governors calls for Iran compliance with JCPoA

VIENNA, NOVEMBER 16 – Italy’s Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Alessandro Cortese, addressed the IAEA 35-nations Board of Governors to underscore the need to intensify efforts in order to re-establish the integrity and full implementation of the 2015 Iranian nuclear agreement (JCPoA). “Iran should comply with its commitments and re-establish at once transparency measures in safeguards with IAEA”, said the Italian Ambassador.

Earlier today, according to Iranian state media, Iran’s nuclear chief Mohammad Eslami called off a visit of a IAEA delegation which would have solved an impasse over traces of uranium found at undeclared sites. “I hope our planned technical meeting with Iran takes place,” IAEA Director Rafael Mariano Grossi Grossi said on Twitter following the statement.

The issue of the uranium particles has been an obstacle to progress in wider talks to revive the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, and has prompted Western powers to push for a fresh resolution targeting Iran at the IAEA Board of Governors meeting this week, this time ordering Iran to quickly answer the Agency questions.
