Libya: UNSR Bathily meets Italy’s envoy Orlando and Ambassador Massari

NEW YORK, OCTOBER 3 – A ‘mini-summit’ was held today in New York between Ambassador Maurizio Massari, the Italian Permanent Representative to the UN, with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Special Envoy for Libya, Nicola Orlando, and the head of UNSMIL and Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily.

Bathily, from Senegal, took over from Slovak Ján Kubiš in early September. Italy will support his mandate and Libya’s efforts on a constitutional path to free and fair elections leading to unity, stability and prosperity for the Libyan people, Italy’s Permanent Mission to the UN indicated on Twitter, calling today’s meeting “fruitful.”

Mr. Bathily was appointed early in September. He brings to his position over 40 years of experience with his national Government, academic institutions, regional organizations and the United Nations system.  In his most recent assignment with the United Nations, he served, in 2021, as the Independent Expert for the strategic review of UNSMIL.  (@OnuItalia)
