Ukraine: humanitarian shippings to support Moldova’s efforts for refugees

BRINDISI, MARCH 16 – As part of the Italian effort to respond to the emergency in Ukraine, the Italian Cooperation Service organised two humanitarian expeditions, one by land and the other by air, which left the United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot in Brindisi (UNHRD) on 11 and 14 March. A total of about 20 tonnes of relief and shelter supplies left for the Republic of Moldova (including tents, generators, covers, stoves, health and hygiene kits, field toilet facilities, cooking sets and tanks to collect water) to support the Moldavan authorities helping the Ukrainian refugees fleeing their country. These operations were carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, with coordination by the Department of Civil Protection and within the scope of the European Civil Protection Mechanism.

In addition to the total financing of Euro 10 million by the Italian Cooperation Service for humanitarian aid in countries hosting the Ukrainian refugees, including Moldova, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, through the Migration Fund, developed a plan with the UN Refugee Agency, for Euro 10 million, to focus on the needs of children and the protection of more fragile people arriving in Moldova, the main non-EU country hosting the massive inflow of refugees. More specifically, this funding will help support the local authorities in assisting children, strengthening the national asylum system and training local operators to identify and help vulnerable people with specific protection needs.
