COP26: Cornado, “under 30 will lead the way to save the Planet”

GENEVA, OCTOBER 21 – “Citizens of the world under 30 will inherit a warmer, more unpredictable climate, with huge implications for their future. But they will also have the power to point the way forward by calling on policy makers, proposing innovative solutions, telling their stories and collaborating across national borders”, the Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado, said at an event organized in view of the COP26 which will be held in Glasgow from October 31st to November 12th.

Ambassador Cornado said at the event organized at the Palais des Nations by the Permanent Mission of the United Kingdom in view of the COP26 which will be held in Glasgow from October 31st to November 12th. Cornado spoke at the event “Update on Preparations for the UN Climate Change Conference COP26”. organized at the Palais des Nations by the Permanent Mission of the United Kingdom.

The 26th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) will mark a major milestone for the implementation of the Paris Agreement to limit the maximum global average temperature increase to 1.5 degrees celsius from pre-industrial levels.

Ambassador Cornado recalled how, after the G20 in Naples, Italy as co-chair of COP26 with the United Kingdom, hosted two inclusive and ambitious events that took place in Milan from September 28th to 2 October 2nd “Youth4Climate: Driving Ambition” and the “Pre-COP26”.

At the “Youth4Climate: Driving Ambition” event, 400 young people aged between 15 and 29, from the 197 State Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, participated in working groups to develop concrete proposals to mitigate climate changes. These recommendations were presented at the “Pre-COP” event, which was attended by Ministers and experts, and will constitute a contribution to the COP26 in Glasgow.

The Permanent Representative of Italy concluded his speech underlining the importance of involving a wider audience of “non-state actors” including young people: “Their real and wider involvement is an important achievement of the Milan events dedicated to climate change. Reducing inequalities, involving the new generation in decision-making processes, promoting a public-private aid program are just some of the proposals that emerged from those two meetings “.
