VIENNA, AUGUST 23 – The entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) is a crucial goal for nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, the Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Alessandro Cortese, said today at the 57th Preparatory Commission for the CTBT Organization.
Italy and South Africa are co-chairing the upcoming 12th Art. XIV Conference. “All States should work for early consensus on the draft ministerial declaration”, said Cortese. The last conference was held in September 2019 at the UN Headquarters in New York.
The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) contains a special mechanism to promote its entry into force – a conference designed to facilitate this objective takes place every other year. While its official designation is the Conference on Facilitating Entry into Force of the CTBT, it is more commonly known as the “Article XIV conference” in accordance with the relevant Treaty article.
