RIMINI, AUGUST 22 – Italy will call a special G20 meeting on Afghanistan over the next weeks, Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio announced today, while calling for the EU to “stand together”. Speaking at the Rimini Meeting of the Catholic movement Comunione e Liberazione, Di Maio said he will seek the participation of crucial actors for the overall strategy, such as Russia, China and India: The three countries, the foreign minister said, “represent a crucial point in the overall strategy”.
“A common strategy is needed for Afghanistan”, Foreign Minister Di Maio added: “The western alliance must be strengthened”. Urging reflection on past mistakes, Di Maio said action must be taken to stop terrorism returning to Afghanistan after the Taliban’s return to power and stressed the importance of a G7 meeting on Tuesday.
