COVID-19: Italy welcomes UNSC adoption of resolution on global cease fire

NEW YORK, JULY 2 – Italy welcomes the unanimous adoption of UNSC Resolution 2532 in support of the UN Secretary General’s appeal for a global cease fire in light of COVID-19, and looks forward to its immediate implementation, the Italian Mission to the United Nations today said on Twitter.

Italy was one of over 170 member states that endorsed the appeal. After the vote of the Security Council, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres welcomed the Council’s recognition of his efforts to respond to the crisis.

“The adoption of this resolution will send an important signal to conflict parties and may help change calculations on the ground”, said Guterres looking forward to working with all stakeholders to advance efforts towards concrete ceasefires and durable peace.

Wednesday’s resolution makes no mention of the World Health Organization (WHO) which, according to news reports, was a bone of contention during lengthy negotiations on the text, notably between China and the United States, which announced its withdrawal from the UN health agency in April. (@OnuItalia)
