Italy among countries that feel very positively about the United Nations

NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER 24 – Italy is among the countries which feel very positively about the United Nations. New data from the Pew Research Center’s spring 2019 Global Attitudes Survey -which surveyed 34,904 respondents across 32 countries- comparing numbers from 2007 and 2019 yields a bright picture.

71% of the Italian population declared to be in favor of the United Nations, with those declaring themselves ‘very favorable’ grew from 13% to 15%, while the ‘somewhat favorable’ have risen from 54% to 56% and the ‘somewhat unfavorable’ have fallen from 19% to 16%. The ‘very unfavorable’ have risen of one percentage point but remain at a significantly low 6%. This positive attitude and growing support towards the UN is not unique to the Italian country.

According to the new research, people generally have a positive image of the United Nations. Across all countries surveyed, the median for people rating this institution as positive amounts to 61%, whereas a median of only 26% hold a negative view. 12 of the 14 European Countries surveyed feel positively about the UN, and so do 69% of Canadians and 59% of Americans. Regions where support for the UN is low are Israel, with 65% declaring themselves unfavorable, and Russia, although a permanent member of the Security Council.

These views have remained relatively stable over time. 19 of the 32 nations were also surveyed in 2007: six countries have grown more favorable, three less favorable, and in ten no statistically significant change was detected. Furthermore, the survey shows the youth (18-29) as being generally more favorable to the efforts of this diplomatic institution. This holds true for 19 of the 32 countries. (SB@OnuItalia)
