HLPF 2019: Spotlight on Venice City Solutions 2030; Costa to attend side event

NEW YORK, JULY 20 – Spotlight on the Venice City Solutions 2030 initiative next week at the United Nation. The Permanent Mission of Italy, on the margins of the United Nations High level Political Forum 2019, will host the Side Event “Financing the SDGs at the local level”  on Tuesday, July 16. The Italian Minister of the Environment, Sergio Costa, is scheduled to attend, along with Stefano Bonaccini, President of the Emilia Romagna Region (Italy), President of AICCRE, President of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions, and Stefano Manservisi, Director General for International Cooperation and Development of the European Union.

The Government of Cameroon, the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Madagascar are the co-sponsors. The side event will showcase innovative solutions that countries and cities are already applying to SDG financing at the local level, inspiring others and sharing trends and experiences with the HLPF. Two examples are the work of the Malaga Coalition for municipal finances and the Venice City Solutions 2030 event, which took place in Venice (Italy) in November 2018.

Organized by UN-Habitat, UNCDF, UNDP,and UCLG, Venice City Solutions is an annual event that explores various aspects of the local implementation of Agenda 2030. The Italian Association for the Council of European Municipalities (AICCRE) hosted the forum which received financial support of Platforma and the United Nations Advisory Committee of Local Authorities (UNACLA).  The event also counted with the technical contribution of FMDV. The first edition last November focused on how to finance the SDGs at the local level. More than 100 participants from 30 different countries gathered in Venice to share opportunities and challenges. In New York representatives from central, local and regional governments will exchange views on how different countries are tackling the financial aspects of implementing the SDGs at the local level. Among the questions which will be addressed are:

– How can existing financial mechanisms be used to accelerate implementation of the SDGs at the local level?
– What are the new or untapped financial mechanisms to help local and regional governments achieve Agenda 2030?
– How can we raise awareness of the need for local and regional governments to have the necessary financial resources to implement Agenda 2030?
– What are the challenges of legislative instruments at the national level?
– What practices and initiatives are different Countries taking at both the local and national levels to make the SDGs a reality? (@OnuItalia)
