NEW YORK, July 19 – Four important meetings at the UN were the opportunity for the Italian Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Maria Tripodi to renew Italy’s on some crucial issues of the current international agenda such as the support for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the backing for Ukraine following the unjustifiable Russian aggression.
The Undersecretary addressed the United Nations during the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. She then spoke at the opening of the celebrations for the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute for the International Criminal Court (ICC), during the General Assembly debate on the situation in the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories due to the Russian aggression, and to an “Arria-formula” meeting of the Security Council on the relationship between the Council and the ICC.
The presence of the Undersecretary at the UN – as stated in a note by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs – allowed to reaffirm Italy’s concrete commitment to some crucial issues on the current international agenda: support for the SDGs and for Ukraine following the Russian aggression, which makes the support for the international justice system and institutions like the ICC particularly crucial. At the end of the mission, Tripodi paid tribute to the work of the Permanent Representation and Ambassador Maurizio Massari “for the invaluable work they carry out in the service of Italy in such an important and strategic location.”
In New York, the Undersecretary also visited the “9/11 Memorial,” accompanied by the Italian Consul General, Fabrizio Di Michele, to lay a wreath in honor of the victims of the 2001 attack and their rescuers. Tripodi, who is responsible for cultural diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also visited the Italian Cultural Institute in New York, where she was received by the director, Fabio Finotti, who briefed her on ongoing activities and future plans. Finally, the Undersecretary had meetings with the Heads of Delegation of Andorra, Chile, Portugal, Slovenia, Switzerland, and Turkmenistan during the UN meetings. She discussed Italy’s bilateral relations with these countries while also presenting Rome’s bid to host Expo 2030. (@OnuItalia)
