NEW YORK, MARCH 16 – On the margin of the 66th Commission on the Status of Women, the Minister for the Family and Equal Opportunities, Elena Bonetti, noted that the imminent renewal of the UNAMA mandate is a decisive moment to reaffirm the strong support of the international community to women and girls in Afghanistan and to reiterate our lasting commitment to preserving their fundamental rights and freedoms.
“It is essential that the Security Council provides the UN Political Mission with a robust mandate to monitor and report on the human rights situation, especially when it comes to women’s and girls’ rights,” Bonetti said. “In addition to monitoring and reporting human rights violations, UNAMA must also be responsible for ensuring the prevention and elimination of gender-based violence. It should also be responsible for advising on the implementation of the main conventions to which Afghanistan is a State Party, and thus bounded, with particular reference to CEDAW”.
Italy – the Minister that guides the Italian delegation at the 66th CSW remembered – is in favour of the maintenance of a strong humanitarian presence inside of the mission and supports the recommendations contained in the last relation of the Secretary General regarding the Human Rights Service.
