Italy will participate to the 40th UPR on human rights and freedoms

GENEVA, JANUARY 24 – The 40th session of the Universal Periodic Review Working Group, a mechanism of review among the Member States of the United Nations on the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms, began today within the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

This session marks also the conclusion of third cycle of the Universal Periodic Review, which started in May 2017. During the session, which will end on February 3rd, the human rights situation in the following countries is scheduled to be examined: Togo, Syrian Arab Republic, Iceland, Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Lithuania, Uganda, Timor-Leste, Republic of Moldova, South Sudan, Haiti and Sudan.

Italy will intervene by formulating recommendations in the interactive dialogues dedicated to each of the States under review, confirming the Italian commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights and its support to the important role carried out by the United Nations in this area.
