GENEVA, DECEMBER 7 – The Permanent Representative of Italy to the International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado, took part today in the meeting of the Ad Hoc Committee for the announcement of voluntary contributions to the Program of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), chaired by the High Commissioner, Filippo Grandi.
Ambassador Cornado emphasized Italy’s strong support and appreciation for the activities carried out by UNHCR in favor of refugees, asylum seekers, stateless persons, internally and forcibly displaced persons around the world.
The Ambassador highlighted how, in the face of growing protection needs and humanitarian needs, the international community must face new challenges arising from complex crises, further aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic, with an even greater impact on those in vulnerable situations, including women, children, adolescent girls, people with disabilities and people belonging to minorities.
Ambassador Cornado recalled that, in 2021, Italy maintained its support for UNHCR’s activities around the world, and increased its financial contribution, providing funds for crises such as Afghanistan, the Syrian situation and that of the Sahel. He also indicated that, pending the approval of the budget law for 2022, Italy will guarantee its contribution to ensure the continuity of the Agency’s operations. (@OnuItalia)
