Guterres praises Italy, new A4P Women Peace and Security Champion

NEW YORK, MARCH 4 – “Women’s participation in peace processes leads to more lasting peace. I’m grateful to new Agenda for Peacekeeping (A4P) Women, Peace and Security Champions -Bangladesh, Canada, Finland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Ireland, UK, Germany – for prioritizing women’s voices & leadership”, the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Twitter.

“Italy strongly supports women’s meaningful participation in peace and security. Women in peace and security is at the center of Italy’s engagement in A4P”, the Italian Mission to the UN replied on Twitter.

Guterres launched his Agenda for Peacekeeping in March 2018. First contributor to peacekeeping operation among Western Countries, Italy endorsed its Declaration of Shared Commitments later that year. During a meeting of the Group of Friends of Peace Operations (an informal, cross-regional group co-led by the governments of Ethiopia, Norway, and the Republic of Korea) last May, USG Lacroix called on member states that had endorsed the declaration to become “A4P champions” that would lead on specific commitments and “work together with other endorsers to identify a common way forward for implementation of A4P commitments on the Member State side”. (@OnuItalia)
