COP25: Costa, “siding with Africa means to side with the planet”

MADRID, DECEMBER 12TH- “We are well aware that siding with the African continent means siding with the world. Because we strongly believe that the fight against climate change passes through Africa. In Africa we win together and can build a new future for everybody,” the Italian Minister for the Environment Sergio Costa said during the “Innovative ways of building resilient environments” side event, organized by the Ministry and ‘Connect for climate-Action in Africa” during the COP25 with the participation of Ibrahim Thiaw, Executive Secretary of Unfccc.

“I am convinced -said Costa- that the only possible approach is one where interventions aimed at strengthening environmentally sustainable solutions are promoted, through the use of natural resources -incentivizing of resilience and adaptivity- and a transition to renewable energy. A transformation which cannot exclude Africa”.

The Minister proceeded to emphasize how Italy, over the past years, has intensified its efforts to accelerate the transformation and nourish innovation: “Since 2015 we signed bilateral cooperation deals with 18 african countries, mainly in the Sahel region. Today we are in the process of executing over 30 projects in the areas of intelligent agriculture, the sustainable management of water resources and the use of renewables. These are sectors in which our Country excels, for its environmental technology and capacity building”. (SB@OnuItalia)
