MADRID, DECEMBER 11 – The first Youth COP against climate change will be hosted in October 2020 in Milan and Greta Thurnburg is invited, the Italian minister for the Environment Sergio Costa announced in Madrid.
“The preparatory efforts for COP26 and most importantly the first Youth COP, will take place in Milan in October. Young people from around the globe will meet for two days, with the aim of writing a final declaration which in November will be brought to the meeting in Glasgow,” explained Costa in a note.
“The aspiration -added the Italian Minister- is for it to become a structured appointment”. Greta Thunberg -who was today chosen as Time Person of the Year 2019 on the same day that she addressed the Madrid climate meeting – will be invited, alongside the UN Youth delegate Jayathma Wickramanayake.
“I believe it’s essential to involve young people as much as possible during this phase,” said Costa, who is currently in Madrid for the COP25 meeting: “Not only to respond to their demand for immediate action, but also because they have ideas and proposals which we will necessarily need to consider if we want them to inherit a better world”.
