Security Council Reform: UfC meets the president of the General Assembly

NEW YORK, OCTOBER 29 – The Italian Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Mariangela Zappia, and members of the group Uniting for Consensus, chaired by Italy, met the president of the General Assembly Tijjani Muhammad-Bande. “It was a productive meeting,” said on Twitter the Italian delegation at the United Nations.

On the meeting’s agenda was the Security Council reform, in light of which the group’s proposal consists of an enlargement in the number of non-permanents seats and the introduction of a new category of elected seats with a longer mandate and the possibility of immediate re-election.

“Looking forward to work together during the new intergovernmental negotiating sessions for a more democratic, representative, responsible, transparent and efficient Security Council,” affirms the delegation’s tweet.
Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, career diplomat and academic from Nigeria, was the Permanent Representative of Nigeria at the UN and vice-president of the General Assembly during the 71st session of 2016. In June he was elected president of the 74th General Assembly, thereby replacing María Fernanda Espinosa, whose mandate ended in September 2019. (SB@OnuItalia)
