MONTREAL, SEPTEMBER 30 – At the 40th General Assembly of Icao (International Civil Aviation Organization), a specialised United Nations agency which governs civil aviation, Italy was re-elected into its Council. The ICAO council comprises 36 members, divided into three groups of different relevance, which are elected every three years. Adequate representation is given to Countries with a significant industrial aviation history and with an effective politics of air transport. The council will serve a three-year term.
In the first phase of the vote, 11 countries were elected in the first group: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. Italy, alongside China, was first classified, securing 160 of the 168 votes. Next November, the Council members will meet to appoint the Icao president for the 2020-22 term. For the position of Icao President, the European Civil Aviation Conference -a pan european organization composed of 44 members- selected the Italian Salvatore Sciacchitano, former deputy-director of Italian civil aviation. Italy has been a council member from 1951, and since 1962 it has always been elected into the first group.
The minister of Infrastructure and Transportation, Paola De Micheli, reacted with enthusiasm to this result: “Italy continues to cover a defining role in regards to international civil aviation. Having been re-elected to the first group, and most importantly having classified as first, makes us proud and incentivizes us to help give the sector a greater momentum”. Nicola Zaccheo, president of Enac, was also satisfied: “The re-election of our country into the first group consolidates our strategic position in the sector of international civil aviation. Italy is a member of the Icao Council since 1951, and since 1962 has always been elected into the first group. Since then, it participates in the achievement of strategic communal goals that aim in particular to the innovation and progress of the aeronautic world. Now, the communal effort is that of supporting the candidacy of Sciacchitano. It would be a reason for great pride not only for Italy but for the whole of Europe since this role, in the entire 75 year history of Icao, has never been covered by an European”. (SB@OnuItalia)
