GENEVA, JUNE 25 – In the year marking the 40th anniversary of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, it is important to renew the commitment to strongly advocate for the rights of women and girls, the Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado, said today.
“Discrimination and violence against women and girls are still widespread and the promotion and the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women is crucial to the empowerment of women and girls in both public and business life as well as to achieve the Sustainable Developments Goals in the 2030 Agenda”, said Cornado, taking the floor in the General Debate of the 41st Session of the Human Rights Council.
Ambassador Cornado also addressed migrations, stressing that it is an absolute priority to find solutions based on shared responsibilities of States and international solidarity. In addition, Italy remains strongly committed to fight against human trafficking and continues to save lives in the Mediterranean Sea and to provide its strong support to the activities of specialized agencies in this respect.
