Zappia meets Gen. Nistri, praises Carabinieri for peacekeeping

NEW YORK, MARCH 25 – Yesterday, Italy’s Permanent Representative to the UN Mariangela Zappia met with the General Commander of the Carabinieri Corps Gen. Giovanni Nistri at the UN building in New York. After their meeting, the Ambassador took to Twitter stating that she was “honored and proud to welcome General Nistri.” Zappia also expressed her “gratitude” to all Carabinieri for their continued support and contribution in the advancement of peace across the world.

Italy’s Carabinieri have always been at the forefront of peacekeeping operations. In countries like Kosovo, Afghanistan, Somalia, Palestine, Mali, Djibouti, Iraq, and Lebanon the Carabinieri have worked alongside local police forces to provide stabilization measures and technical support. One of the prized accomplishments of the Corps Is The Center of Excellence for Stability Peace United based in Vincenza which, was created following the G8 Sea-Land meeting in 2004. The center focuses its efforts on reinforcing the international community’s capacity to carry out peacekeeping missions in African countries.

The Carabinieri are always at the front lines when it comes to initiatives that safeguard cultural traditions in crisis-affected areas. To this end, experts from the Nucleo Tutela Patrimonio Culturale collaborate with UNESCO in the application of their conventions in order to protect cultural heritage in armed conflicts (UNESCO 1954), protect against illicit trading (UNESCO 1970), and protect underwater cultural heritage (UNESCO 2001).
