ISTAT delegation attending 50th UN Statistical Commission in NY

NEW YORK, MARCH 4 – Monitoring, collecting and processing quality data is key in achieving U.N. global goals. Capacity-building in the statistical sector is an important component of Italian development cooperation initiatives and a core issue to discuss also in framework of the Financing for Development process co-facilitated by Italy, the Italian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Mariangela Zappia, said today welcoming in New York a delegation lead by ISTAT President Gian Carlo Blangiardo.

Blangiardo, who was appointed at the beginning of 2019 by the Italian government, and his colleagues are taking part to the 50th U.N. Statistical Commission, an in-depth discussion on the impact of technological innovation and the key importance of statistical tools in pursuing the sustainable development goals adopted with the Agenda 2030. The Commission is meeting March 5-8 at U.N. Headquarters.

Established in 1947, the Statistical Commission is the highest body of the global statistical system, bringing together the Chief Statisticians from member states from around the world. It is the highest decision making body for international statistical activities especially the setting of statistical standards, the development of concepts and methods and their implementation at the national and international level.

ISTAT or Istituto Nazionale di Statistica is the main producer of official statistics in Italy. Its activities include the census of population, economic censuses and a number of social, economic and environmental surveys and analyses. Istat is by far the largest producer of statistical information in Italy, and is an active member of the European Statistical System, coordinated by Eurostat. (@OnuItalia)
