NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER 7 – The Italian Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Maurizio Massari, yesterday hosted a farewell dinner as a tribute to the President of the 76th General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid.
The Italian Ambassador congratulated Shahid for his “groundbreaking presidency during these unprecedented times, where ‘hope’ was needed the most”. A former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, Shahid built his candidacy for the position of President of General Assembly around the theme of hope.
“I truly believed that, given the devastation, the despair, and the heartache that we have over the last 18 months, it is time that the United Nations as the world body that encompasses the entire international community, the whole 193 countries, it is time that we stand up and we give hope to our constituents. The Charter says “We the Peoples” so it is time that we the people, unite in giving the hope that people so desperately need”, he had said in his first interview after assuming the mandate.
Following Shahid, Ambassador Csaba Kőrösi, Director of Environmental Sustainability at the Office of the President of Hungary, was elected to serve as President of the 77th session of the General Assembly which will open on Tuesday, 13 September 2022. The first day of the high-level General Debate will be Tuesday, 20 September 2022. (@OnuItalia)
